Pages edits on iPhone did not sync in ICloud

Changes to Pages doc made in iPhone did not sync in iCloud across devices (double checked and everything setup). When I opened on iPad the changes were missing. It didn’t show a conflict which it usually does if not synced. Now my changes made on iPhone disappeared and doc on both iPad and iPhone don’t have the latest changes. Is there anyway to find the version with changes—Pages is supposed to automatically save isn’t it, I have never had to manually save.
