Using 'Monterey' OS I have tried various 'sudo' commands to try to start WiFi again! However it stubbornly refuses to become active despite the 'sudo' commands. The 'Network' screen does appear but seems impaired to a fair extent. There is no WiFi options for instance. I have tried deleting the files in System Information etc but nothing seems to have any effect whatsoever.

OK, well after that should be the physical interface information for the Airport card and any other Wi-Fi adapters, and following that should be the info on all the detected Wi-Fi networks.
I think it's safe to say your Wi-Fi card has failed. Your best bet is a USB Wi-Fi adapter.
If you go to the Apple Menu item and pick "About this Mac" and then run the System Report, what do you see under Wi-Fi?

I have changed the Wi-Fi card which has resolved the problem. Still I won't take it to a supermarket cafe in case the same thing happens again!
