Connecting iPad air to 2018 Mac Mini

I have an app (Easy Canvas) on an iPad air that should make a wifi connection to my 2018 Mac Mini. The app needs to be initiated with a USBc connection from iPad to Mac. I confirmed that the app had access to WiFi and connected iPad and Mac with a USBc cable. The app does not respond and displays "Waiting for connection"

Are there any settings that need to be set in order to initiate communication?

Couldn't find a direct link to the app developer in the app store. Hope someone here can help.

Try a different cable. Many 3rd party cables are charge only and do not carry a data connection.

Thank you. Tried another USBc cable but the app still refuses to connect.
