I am having problems connecting a new iPad to a MacBook Pro

I was given a brand new iPad 10th gen (iOs 18) and I'm trying to connect it via BT to my Macbook Pro with Ventura.

When tapping on the Mac's name on the iPad BT settings, it answers with "Macbook not supported".

Really? Macbook not supported by an iPad?

Some of the Continuity features make use of Bluetooth, but not in a traditional pairing way.

Macs and iPads normally work together using things like

  • iCloud
  • Continuity features
  • Connections to the same e-mail accounts (and associated calendars)
  • Manual synchronization
  • Shared subscriptions to services like Apple Music, Apple TV, and Apple Arcade (if you use any of those)
  • The ability to re-download music, movies, and TV shows previously purchased from the iTunes Store

If you poke around some of the following links, you may find a way to accomplish the task you were hoping to use Bluetooth pairing for.

Presumably your iPad indicates that it must be restored:

If you see the Restore screen on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

These support pages outline the available methods to restore an iPad - either from a backup, or to Factory Settings:

You’ll need access to either a Windows PC (with iTunes for Windows installed - or more recent Apple Devices App) or a Mac computer (with iTunes or Finder - as appropriate for the installed version of macOS).

Download and use iTunes for Windows – Apple Support

Update to the latest version of iTunes – Apple Support

Apple Devices App (Windows PC):

Use of a PC or Mac computer is unavoidable. If you don’t have access to a suitable computer of your own, that of a helpful friend or family member will suffice. Alternatively, the technicians at the Genius Bar of your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) will be delighted to assist.

Yup that is correct you've never been able to to connect two Apple device together via bluetooth unless you're tethering.

Thank you. I finally was able to "find" my iPad (came with IOS 17.5.1-- updated to 18.2) on my MacBook Pro (IOS Sonoma 14.7.2). Eventually after multiple tries just got it up and running (I guess the proper term is "restored") without using my iPhone or my MacBook. Frustrating not to have my Apps from my other devices but have it set up so they will synch when updated??? Used this article : https://www.solveyourtech.com/how-to-sync-ipad-and-iphone-apps-a-comprehensive-step-by-step-guide/ Fingers crossed. But it shouldn't be this hard!
