how can I edit text within a merged cell in pages

In trying to simply sort a list in Pages, I've had to follow a YouTube tutorial which has hit a snag by which I can't select the sorted text within the merged table cell. The table sort of "bounces" when I try. I looked up Lock/Unlock and it's not locked. I tried making the list in Numbers and sorting that way but I can't get the list out of the table and if I merge the Numbers list I can't seem to edit that either. I just want to alphabetically sort a simple list in Pages! Why can't Pages do this? Wordperfect could do this in 1989.

Is your goal to simply sort a list of text without it being first in a table, or is this a mandate to sort text in a table?


If it must be sorted in a table, I see in practice that if a merged table cell is anchored in the column to be sorted, it will be treated as if it is in that sorted column. As a test, I start with the following:



and now I tell Column A to Sort Ascending:
