How do I fix Bluetooth call issues on iPhone 15 Pro with headphones?

Hi. I’ve been having some issues lately with iPhone 15 Pro during calls when trying to use BT headphones. It started with Jabra Elite Active 75t headphones, audio would sort of work but I and the person on the other end would hear each other only really distorted and “metallic sounding”. I thought it was the Jabras going bad since I’ve had them for three years. I ended up buying Beats Studio Buds Plus headphones and the issues continue but this time I first loose the microphone on the headphones and I’m not able to get it working. Then if I end the call and start it again, I won’t get even the audio from the person I’m calling to. This happens with regular phone calls and Telegram calls. These Beats buds have had microphone issues with voice messages (Telegram) and iPhone’s native voice memos app too. And here comes the fun part: I tested both of the headphones with my Android phone and they are working flawlessly so the issue must be my iPhone. I have the latest update installed to both of my headphones and to iPhone, I’ve paired the hedphones again to my iPhone, I’ve reset both of the headphones and I’ve restarted my iPhone several times. What else can I do? Only thing that comes to my mind is to factory reset my iPhone but it’s partially owned by my company and enrolled to MDM so I’m not able to do factory reset without breaking everything on MDM’s side which I don’t want to do.

Do you use a VPN on your work managed phone? VPN's can and often do cause connection issues, even with Bluetooth devices. Also, Apple released iOS 18.3.1 today, so definitely update to the very latest if you haven't already.

I actually tried one VPN in the beginning of the year around the same time these issues started. I’ve removed the application already but its VPN configuration was still present in my phone’s settings. I deleted that one as well and updated to latest 18.3.1, now I need to see if it helps with this issue. There is also one VPN configuration pushed by MDM but I don’t think it could be the reason behind this since I’ve had these issues only for couple of months and that config has been there since getting my current phone in the end of 2023. But let’s see now, I didn’t realize VPN could cause this kind of issues with Bluetooth

Update on the situation. It seems that the issue is now gone after removing the VPN configuration that I had put there myself and updating to 18.3.1. I’m suspecting it was the VPN configuration that broke everything. Thank you so much!

I'm glad my advice helped. VPN on iPhone can cause all sorts of issues. You're very welcome!
