Carplay disconnects when a message comes through

I had this issue a couple of years ago which was thankfully fixed by an iOS update. Unfortunately it has come back again now with the latest update to iOS 18.

I plug my iPhone in when I start the car and Carplay starts up as it should.

I can use all the apps, make calls, use Siri etc. without a problem.

The issue arises when I am on the phone.

If I am talking to someone, and a message comes through, it will immediately disconnect the phone from Carplay. The call doesn't disconnect, and if I can unplug / plug the cable back in it will start up again fine and the call will continue.

iPhone 13 running iOS 18.2.1

Mazda 3 running the most up to date version of Carplay (apologies, I don't have the details).

Any help you could offer would be amazing.

Many thanks,

Ian

Hi again, here are more steps you can try to see if it will fix your issue:

1. Disable VPN or Private Relay: If you're using a VPN or Apple's Private Relay, try turning them off before connecting your iPhone to your car's system.

2. Delete and Re-Pair Your Car in CarPlay

Settings:

  • On your iPhone, go to Settings >General > CarPlay.
  • Select your car and choose Forget This

Car.

  • Restart both your iPhone and your car's infotainment system.
  • Reconnect your iPhone to your car and set up CarPlay again.

3.Check for Firmware Updates for Your Car's Infotainment System:

Ensure that your Mazda 3's infotainment system is running the latest firmware. You can usually find updates on the manufacturer's website or by contacting your local dealership.

4. Reset Network Settings on Your iPhone:

Go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.

• This will reset Wi-Fi networks and passwords, cellular settings, and VPN settings that you've used before.

If the issue persists contact Apple Support for further assistance.

Ian,

You described the same exact problem I am having.

“If I am talking to someone, and a message comes through, it will immediately disconnect the phone from Carplay. The call doesn't disconnect, and if I can unplug / plug the cable back in it will start up again fine and the call will continue.”

I have a MAZDA CX9 not sure if that matters.

I just purchased the Apple 16 and new cord. I hoped the problem went away but it did not. I think it has to be my car?

Hi Joann,

Apologies, I should have updated this post sooner.

I had lodged a support ticket with Apple and was trouble-shooting with them over a couple of weeks.

In the end it was the Firmware of the Infotainment system of the Mazda. There is nowhere online that will tell you what the most up to date version is, but you can call your local dealer and they can tell you.

There were some guides online that 'potentially' could work, where you take the SD card out of the car, sign up to Mazda, download some bits etc. but none of it really sounded like it was a silver bullet. If your car is newer than mine, there may be other options - but I am definitely not a car expert...

I contacted the dealer and asked them to update the firmware (thankfully I was due for a service).

It instantly fixed the problem.

Please note, updating the firmware is NOT something that Mazda will do unless requested.

I was running version 70, and the latest was version 74.

Hopefully this can solve your troubles as well as it is terribly frustrating!

Ian
