baffled, iTunes iPad behavior...

I've been able to set up playlists on the new iPad, but today, noticed iTunes called it an iPhone,

I selected download update only

it began installing it,

I was trying to create new playlists, it wouldn't let me do that

said it was

synching"

I don't want my iTunes library synched with my phone, iPod or iPad, it is too large

I tried selecting the iPad symbol on the top of iTunes, on my phone or iPod, that the device, that did not work with the iPad, I want to choose manage the library manually, I can't do that?

what is this about?

I can't use the iPad the way I organize and select what I want on it the way I can with iPhone or iPod?

Let's address that point (above).

If your music library is too large for your device (whether it's an iPod, iPhone or iPad) you can use Sync Selected playlists, artists, albums and genres, which allows you to choose what to add to the device.

In other words, you can "manually" decide what you want iTunes to Sync to your device, but note that this is not the same thing as the iTunes option to Manually Manage the device. (I know, it's confusing, an Apple speciality). Study the two screenshots below to see the difference between Manually Managing and you manually deciding what to Sync to the device:

The two screenshots below show the setting options for the iPod that is connected to iTunes. In the first screenshot (the Device/Settings/Music pane, labeled 1. in the screenshot), the option labelled as 3. offers you the choice between:

    • synchronising everything in your library to the device - Sync Entire music library (which, if your library is too large, you won't be able to do). With this option, you will not see the sections number 4. in the screenshot
    • you manually choosing what to add to the Sync procedure - Sync Selected playlists, albums, artists and genres, which then displays the sections in 4. You then select (from those sections) only what you wish to add to the device. With this option, if you add music to your library, which is in any of the selected items you've chosen, the next Sync will add the new items to the device without you doing any further selecting

In the screenshot below (the Device/Settings/Summary pane), notice the box named Manually manage music and videos. In my screenshot it is not ticked (checked):

The two screenshots shown here mean that the device (an iPod in this case) uses Sync to add and remove content, but what is added is only what has been selected from the boxes labelled 4. (in the screenshot)
