Why is my Apple TV "Continue Watching" not updating?

My AppleTV 4K is having issues with the "Continue Watching" function -- it's not updating after I watch episodes of shows.

We started rewatching Severance S1 and got as far as episode 3 before it stopped updating. We were on episode 4 but under CW it still said 3. We watched up until ep6 and it still said ep3. I had to manually select "watched" to get it to advance. And tonight we watched the latest SNL on Peacock and it still showed up on the list even though we finished it.

I've seen users on Reddit report this too. Any fixes?

Please verify the app settings for Use Play History. That should be set to ‘On’, if you want the watch progress to be updated.

If that was already set as intended, then try signing out, then immediately sign in again, to refresh the account properties, including watch progress.

This is also happening to me. Apple TV HD (3rd Gen, I think). It's been going on for a while now. I'm not sure if it's been since tvOS 18, but it's been stuck for at least a couple of months.

When using other apps and services, it's OK, though annoying. They have their own "continue watching" support.

But with "Continue Watching" being frozen for me, it means it doesn't remember Apple TV+ shows nor purchased shows and movies. This is very frustrating.

It's not just a "use play history" setting. I have even did a reset (and restore of apps/settings) of my Apple TV HD and the problem continues.

"Continue Watching" is working from my iPad, where I also watch a fair amount of media. The Apple TV will get updates from that. But Apple TV will not update on its own.

What does Roku have anything to do with Apple TV hardware?

This has been a problem since the release of TvOS 18 last fall, but only on the 3rd gen (non-4k) Apple TVs. It's been partially fixed more recently, in that sometimes if you restart the Apple TV and/or sign out of your iCloud account and sign back in, Continue Watching may start to work for a little while but then may stop again after some time until you restart/re-login again.

Hopefully, a future update to TvOS will fix this, but being that these 3rd-gen Apple TV's have been out of production for a while, whatever this bug is, is probably not as high of a priority. Keeping my fingers crossed...
