When I want the usual thumbs up emoji, they open way to the right and I have to scroll through a dozen screens to get back to the start.

Instead of continuous swiping right which takes a while to find Emojis, try searching for the Emoji or drag your finger along the Emoji bar in the bottom.
Mine definitely does not. I generally use one of the first few emojis like the thumbs up or smiley face. It always opens to the screen shown below.

You’re welcome. I figured out that the Emoji keyboard will reopen to your last opened page.
