  • 2025 January, objective was moving from MAC mini 2012 to MAC mini M4 2024 and secondly attaching a previously working BOSE companion 5 speakers
  • I first attempted failed at connecting my BOSE companion 5 with a dongle USB-C to USB-A and a cable USB-A ->USB-B.
  • Second attempt, as published by others on the web, acquired a cable USB-C to USB-B . Resulting with success for 5 days then suddenly the sound failed.
  • still have not found the solution as posted by many many users.

if someone does find a solution please do publish it. Otherwise an other item that goes in the recycling bin.

I also have this same issue with Bose Companion 5 losing connection. I just upgraded to the Mac mini M4 from a 2018 Mac mini.

The 2018 Mac mini had no problem maintaining the connection to the Bose companion 5. I was able to use the Bose speakers either directly connected to the 2018 Mac mini or via a docking station.

The big difference as I see it is, the Mac mini M4 does not have a USB-A, this shouldn't affect the issue as I have tried over 6 different docking stations as well as adapter cables, and every one of them experienced the same disconnect.

The disconnect happens while the Mac is awake and sometimes when returning from sleep. So this makes me believe the issue is with the Mac mini M4 which is a big problem because I am sure it would affect other USB-A devices and not just these Bose companion 5 speakers.

Yeah, it really shouldn't be complicated. I wonder if this isn't some USB incompatibility. Also, these speakers are vintage 2007-ish, afaik, and it may be an age related problem with the hardware. (18 years!)

I'll just throw these out here:

BOSE Companion 5 Speaker Owner's Guide

Troubleshooting steps begin on p.19.

These speakers are USB audio output devices (obviously) so check the Audio Settings on the Mac.

If you can’t hear sound from your Mac speakers - Apple Support

  1. ❝On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Settings, then click Sound  in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.)
  2. Click Output, then make sure the external USB speakers are selected.
  3. Press and hold Option, then choose Apple menu > System Information.
  4. Click USB in the Hardware section of the sidebar, then make sure your speakers are listed. If they aren’t, try unplugging the speakers and then plugging them in again.

If your external speakers still aren’t working, check the instructions that came with your speakers.❞
