i have recently bought a MacBook air with touch id sensor , I want my mac to ask me to confirm purchases on my iPhone touch id as it did with my previous MacBook pro. rather than the touch id on the mac!! Can this be done?

Please follow this path,
iPhone, Settings > scroll down > Wallet & Apple Pay > scroll down > Allow Payment on Mac > enable, if already enabled, momentarily turn off and then back on

Which model MacBook Air and what iOS version is it using? Some older MacBooks don’t have the necessary hardware for secure transactions.
2023 macbook iOS version ventura 13.7, its got the finger print scanner button but i like the fact my previous mac asked my phone for authentication.....
As Phil pointed out, you need to use Touch ID on your Mac.
