MacBook Pro M4 Max performance drops and crashes during simulations

I recently bought a Macbook Pro M4Max (64Gb ram) to replace my MBP M2Max (32gb ram), I also bought a Mac Mini M4 (24gb ram) to replace my Mac Mini M1 (8Gb ram). I work as a visual effects artist doing FX simulations so I decided to upgrade so I can have more Ram to play with.

In general the M4Max it's almost twice as fast as my Windows PC (Ryzen 9 3900x , 128Gb Ram, RTX3090), but I found that when I'm pushing a bit more some simulations , for example increasing the resolution of a fluid simulation to get more detail, the M4max starts to slow down and even reboots my Macboock Pro, the same simulation that the M4 does in 35 minuts, the M4Max does it in almost 2 hours, wich makes no sense.

Anyone have found issues with the M4 Max?

It's been 16 days since I bought the laptop so I can't return it, and I trade in my M2Max that at least was working well.. now I have an expensive machine that can't do the job. I contacted the software developer, but it looks like it's a hardware issue.

Consider downloading and running this little "discovery" utility, Etrecheck. It changes NOTHING. Etrecheck was developed by senior contributor here, and uses system calls to collect often-needed information.

it contains little tests for speeds of devices, CPU utilization, memory usage, energy usage and a digest of recent problems, in one easy to use package. it does not even need to be Installed. Because less can be learned when your Mac is running great, best time to run is when your problems are actually occurring, if possible.

if you follow the directions faithfully, its report (pre-laundered of all personally-identifiable information) can be "Shared" to the System ClipBoard, then Pasted into an ‘Additional Text’ window in a reply on the forums.

Use Etrecheck Pro for free:

Google chrome is the biggest resource hog that is not obvious malware. its punishes performance on any Mac. some outspoken senior contributors suggest that the only proper way to run Chrome is on a Chromebook.

ANY other browser you choose will have a lighter footprint.

But wait, there's more...

on your system, that enormous resource hog is eclipsed by:

houdinifx

...eating up the most cpu, the most RAM and the most Energy of anything else by far.

¿Is that expected behavior? I thought that was a plug-in that ran under other image manipulation software, but I don't see any image manipulation software running.

Jan 17, 2025 8:08 PM in response to Grant Bennet-Alder

Yes, the amount of RAM used by Houdini is the expected. Houdini is a 3d software used mainly for visual effects (volumes, fluids, particles , rigid body , etc) so it uses a lot of resources, specially Ram and CPU.

Same software it's running normal on my Mac Mini M4 and 24Gb RAM , a bit of swaping when testing some mid size simulation But on the M4Max it start to slow down exponentially and some time crashing the machine.

MacBook Pro M4 Max performance drops and crashes during simulations
