OK. So, what's the solution? Providing that may help many, for certain.

"Reply to TheLittles I didn't really do much of anything with the Messages app . I updated devices to 18.3.1 and updated my MacMini to 15.3 . I turned my Mac hard drive off , then on because it wouldn't wake up , it's awake now . Would the size of the messages be impacted by several extensions / plugins on the Mac ? So I was in the iCloud and checked again = zero . I'm sorry that I can't say what the solution is ."

Reinstall the macOS:

You updated both devices --so some bugs were probably fixed coincidently. As for extensions and plugin taking part, that would not have taken any role in this, unless there is a bug in it. So, I would say there were some inconsistencies within the macOS. So, perform a reinstall of the macOS, jus two be certain that all is safe.
