Is it safe to connect Mac mini to both HDMI and USB-C?

Is it possible to connect my Mac Mini M4 to one display (an Lg OLED tv) but use two different connections, HDMI and USB C?

HDMI would connect to an AV receiver and the USB would connect directly to a TV with a USB C to HDMI cable.

I am attempting to do this but it seems to be creating black screen issues perhaps.

I'm a bit confused, so more explanation as to what you're trying to accomplish may be necessary. Normally when you're using an AV receiver, all your playing devices connect to the receiver, which is itself then connected to the TV.

If your receiver is not connected to the TV, then it would be possible to connect the Mac to the receiver via HDMI just for the audio, and to the TV via a USB-to-HDMI cable for the video (though that can in some cases cause audio sync issues). But if the receiver is also connected to the TV, that is indeed likely to cause problems.

If that doesn't seem to cover your situation, please post back and explain further what it is you're trying to accomplish.

Regards.

Thanks for the response. Yes I have the HDMI connected to the AV receiver so that I can utilize the AV sound system. AV connects to TV for display.

I have the USB C to HDMI connected directly to the TV, so the sound is the Mac Mini M4 but still using the TV for the display. This way I do not have to use the AV receiver at all.

it seems to work, but then something triggers the black screen where you see the login screen for like two seconds then I get a no signal on the screen, regardless of which connection you select.

If I understand correctly, which I may not, it appears that you have two simultaneous active connections from your Mac to your TV, one directly and one through the AV receiver, and that's very likely to cause signal confusion.

I think you should either just pass the signal through the AV receiver and not connect the Mac to the TV directly, or just connect the Mac to the TV via HDMI and let the TV pass the audio signal to the receiver. The latter would probably be the preferred route if you don't want to always use the receiver, though of course you'll need to change settings in the TV to correctly set the audio output as appropriate when you want to use it's speakers rather than the Mac's speakers or the receiver.

Hope this helps.

Regards.
