How can I create styles based on other styles in Pages?

In Word, I can create a style (paragraph or character) that is based on another style. For example, I create a default style (e.g. Normal) and assign font, etc. Subsequent styles (such as BodyFirst) would be "based on" that style. When the Normal style is modified, the changes would propagate through any styles that were based on Normal. This was the case for other page design apps I used (Word, FrameMaker, inDesign, etc.)

Is this not an option in Pages?
