Where can I upload the proof of purchase?

I received a Mac for Christmas, and have the receipt from an Apple approved store. I would like to put Apple care on my computer, but there is no where I can upload the proof of purchase. What am I missing? Any and all assistance would be lovely.

If you signup through (On your MacBook, go to System Settings > General > About) Apple should verify your purchase via your device’s serial number and system registration information to verify the purchase date and eligibility for AppleCare.

I believe you would have to go through apple support in order to actually upload your receipt.
