Unlocking a SIM Card:

Go through the carrier, as they are the one who configure the SIM card. You friend may need to be the one who does this. As for transferring it over, has your friend perform as instructed here, including the backup and the iCloud logout: What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

If your SIM is locked then you will need the code used to lock it. If you do not know it, go to your carrier and ask for a new SIM.

You will need to contact the carrier the phone is locked to and ask them if they will unlock it.

If you are not currently a customer of that carrier, they are under no obligation to unlock it.

If you don’t know which carrier the device is linked to then set-up your iPhone and follow the instructions on the apple support website which is linked down below. After that contact the carrier who should be able to help you after that.
