iPhone 16 Pro Max overheating

I’ve had my phone for about two months now and it keeps overheating while charging. It will hit 80% charge then get the “charging will resume when battery has returned to normal temperature” error. I take it off the charger and it will immediately start draining the battery at an accelerated rate. I’ll power cycle the phone at least once then throw it back on the charger. That usually fixes the problem but this happens almost daily.

📱Facing iPhone heating issues? Here's what worked for me on my iPhone 12 Pro:

1️⃣ Backup on iCloud/iTunes

2️⃣ Log out of Apple ID

3️⃣ Erase (Keep eSIM Data)

❌ DO NOT restore from backups! Set up as new iPhone. Wait 2-3 days - no issue! That Indicates...

✅ No hardware/ iOS issue

Now...

📦 Restore data gradually

🔍 Find app/settings causing heat

My experience says this is purely caused by some third-party app that you may have installed.

I am not aware of the ambient temperature in which you are using the iPhone. However --> Keeping iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch within acceptable ...

Store the device where the temperature is between -20º and 45º C (-4º to 113º F). Don’t leave the device in your car, because temperatures in parked cars can exceed this range.

Use iOS devices where the ambient temperature is between 0º and 35º C (32º to 95º F). Low- or high-temperature conditions might cause the device to change its behavior to regulate its temperature. Using an iOS device in very cold conditions outside of its operating range might temporarily shorten battery life and could cause the device to turn off. Battery life will return to normal when you bring the device back to higher ambient temperatures. Using an iOS device in very hot conditions can permanently shorten battery life.

You are fast charging your phone and the statement you see does NOT indicate your iPhone is overheating. We ALL get this notification when using Optimized Battery Charging when fast charging our phones. This actually arrived, either with iOS 17 or maybe with iOS 18. There is nothing wrong is the main point, I'm trying to make. It is simply the phones way to help itself NOT overheat during fast charging. It's actually a GOOD thing your phone is doing.

Reread what wrote, it clearly states the phone is overheated. Additionally, the phone is at an elevated temperature and will drain the battery at the rate of about 1% every 2-3 minutes once off the charger until I do a hard reset, aka power cycle the phone.

Reread what I wrote. This is a normal statement when using fast charging. The statement is perhaps a bit misleading, but your iPhone is NOT overheating. The statement which you so kindly copied word for word says: “charging will resume when battery has returned to normal temperature.” It does not say your phone has overheated, nor is your phone showing an image of a thermometer, which is what an iPhone, which has overheated would ALWAYS show. To me, it's unfortunate Apple chose the words they chose, because you and others are now convinced their phones are overheating during charging, but I can assure they are not. As I suggested in my first response, the phone is doing exactly what it should do and it stops the charge at 80%, then continues the charge when the battery is cooler, but again, it's NOT overheating.

If you don't want to believe me, that's fine. I am giving you the truth.
