What should I do if my trade-in value for Mac mini M1 drops?

I wanted to trade in a Mac Mini M1. The trade in value quoted initially dropped by the time I completed my purchase which I wasn't expecting.

Then I had an Apple technician on the phone to guide me through the process to erase it. He viewed the screen and told me what to do. He said when it got to the 'Hello' screen, it was ready to return.

Apple are saying there's something 'wrong' with it and are returning it. But it worked absolutely fine. I only upgraded to the new Mac Mini because it I wanted to.

What happened?

The price drop was by-the-by, albeit surprisingly common. My main complaint is about TRADE-IN. Does anyone ever get it?

I looked at Reddit and Twitter. It seems there are many complaints about this going back years. People are saying if you go in-store, it's more likely your trade-in will be accepted. But online, NO.

Yes I have traded in on three separate occasions online now and on none of them did the price drop. From this I would draw two conclusions:

  1. If your description of the device is accurate then the price doesn't change. I'm not saying that there was any attempt to mislead by anybody, but folks may misunderstand the queries or may provide incomplete information. Not every user is technically proficient enough to assess the state of their hardware nor the value of it.
  2. Reading complaints on Reddit (or anywhere else) simply provides information about those complainants and no more. As we comment here all the time, folks don't post unless they have a problem. We don't get 100 million people on here saying "Upgraded, no issues". The only people posting are those few who have issues, therefore the fact that a few people have had issues - even a few hundred - is no indication of the health or efficiency of the system. It merely tells you some people have issues.

The following link has the steps to follow prior to sending it in, I suspect an error was made somewhere along the way when you originally prepared it with the tech. If you did it over the phone I can understand how that might have happened. By the way, prior to shipping remember to always document with photos that the machine was running just fine when it was sent in, make sure the pictures are date/time stamped!

What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your Mac

Finally, if the steps in the link are what you did please answer the following q

Did you have any of the following third party apps installed on your Mac?

       •      Antivirus Apps

       •      Cleaning Apps

       •      Security Apps

       •      VPN Apps

       •      Maintenance Apps

The moderator likely retitled the thread because you probably violated some aspect of the Terms of Use that you agree to when posting on these forums, please read the T of U so you can understand.

One of the primary things that is a violation is ranting is not okay and your last post comes across as a long rant. Sorry but that is how I read it. We get you are unhappy and upset however ranting on these forums will NOT help. We are not Apple and cannot speak for them and Apple does not read or participate in user to user forums. So you need to either work through Apple's proper channels or if you want to sell the computer on your own then you have a choice. I would think that after your experience with Apple trade in that you may want to explore selling the computer on your own. If you do, please be sure your prepare the computer properly per the instructions in What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your Mac otherwise your selling experience will not be good. In addition, do research to find the safest and most effective method of selling.

Good luck!

Why did the moderator re-title this?

People are reporting the same as me - perfectly functioning computers rejected for trade-in on some bogus excuse or other.

Some have reported devices returned to them smashed and trashed.

My M1 Mac Mini functioned absolutely fine. This was the first time I traded-in, I usually keep computers for many years, but I wanted the M4 Mac Mini.

I placed the order ONLINE.

I got help from Apple Support to prepare the M1 Mac Mini to return. They viewed the screen, guided me step-by-step.

So what happened? Apple Support technicians DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY'RE DOING? ?? The man who helped me erase my Mac Mini did something wrong?

Apple Support don't know how to install an OS on an erased Mac Mini??

Why should I pay for their mistakes?

Or is it the case that there is no trade-in unless you go to a store? In which case, don't offer it. Why pretend?

Hi Moderator, please allow me to be deeply disappointed and confused. Put my original title back. There is obviously an issue with trade-in, it's been like this for years, don't pretend you've never heard of it before.
