Mac mini doesn't hear microphone input

I control my Mac mini using voice control, cannot get it to work with a speechware microphone. Speechware indicates the microphones are compatible with macOS.

Right now I'm using a very old Desktop microphone (purchased in 2014, branded VEC), which my Mac has no problems recognizing. It is plugged into a USB-A to USB-C adapter.

The speechware microphone I would like to use has a 3.5mm plug. I purchased an Anker USB-C to 3.5 mm adapter and plugged it into my Mac, it recognizes the microphone in sound settings as “hi-res audio”. In sound settings, when I select the speechware microphone, the input level meter does not move. In privacy and security settings, it does not show up under microphone.

Are there any other troubleshooting options I can try? Computer is a 2024 Mac mini M4
