is the supplied 5GB no longer adequate for a backup?

I've literally deleted and disabled every app as well as file storage and photos and contacts (this is not my first rodeo). there's <200k on my 5GB used, but, the backup tells me there's not enough room.

If 5GB isn't enough to do a very basic backup, why hasn't it been bumped up? HALP

Buy more iCloud storage or find an alternate backup and syncing solution.

It’s impossible to have just 200kb. How much storage is your device currently using? Please follow this path,

iPhone > Settings > General > iPhone Storage > how much?

Hello hmblkt2024,

Try turning off some of the items backing up to iCloud as recounted in this post: iCloud says not enough storage but there … - Apple Community

I will walk you through the updated process since the iCloud user interface has been updated in iOS 18:

  • On your iPhone go to Settings -> iCloud (at the very bottom of the Settings list) -> Storage -> Backups -> your iPhone
  • The true backup size will be shown
  • You should now have the option to toggle on or off certain items that are backing up to iCloud

If you need to backup larger files, I would follow Jeff Donald's advice and find another solution apart from iCloud (such as an external SSD that can plug into your iPhone).

Have a nice day!

I agree with Jeff. Exactly where are you seeing 200kb? That seem hugely implausible. When you open Settings, then tap your name at the top, then iCloud, what does it show for storage at the top? Seems virtually impossible it will only say 200kb.

And like Jeff said, buy more storage. You can go to the next storage option (50GB) for $1/month ($12/year). You likely spend more on two fancy drinks at a Starbucks.

You ask why Apple hasn't bumped the free plan higher? We can't answer that question as we are all users on this user to user only forum. If you've had an Apple Account for some time, the day usually comes for most users that they reach the end of the line for the free plan. I did long ago. I now pay for an Apple One account, which in addition to including Apple TV+ and Unlimited Games, includes 200GB of storage.
