Notes disappeared after Yahoo password request

A password request for my Yahoo mail account kept popping up on my iPhone 12 yesterday, I kept cancelling it as it was annoying. I don’t have my Yahoo synced to my iPhone apps like Calendar or Notes, but every time I went to those apps this Yahoo password request popped up, in the end I did what it asked to get rid of it. Now all my Notes from 2024 and 2023 have disappeared. I’ve tried removing the Yahoo from my Mail accounts. Looking in my iCloud - they’re not in there and I have tons of storage. The only notes in Notes are about 4 random very old ones. I simply don’t know where my usual notes have gone. This Yahoo thing seemed to coincide with a Yahoo upgrade yesterday and was pushing through this request to sync it in my Mail accounts, Notes & Calendar etc and by doing so has seemed to erase all my usual Notes files / my Notes from last 2 years - it’s like they’re hidden somewhere and I can’t figure out where. There is no Recently Deleted folder option showing in my Notes app or my iCloud, they just have these small handful of Notes from ages ago. I’ve tried making my iPhone the default Notes option that hasn’t worked either. Where did all my Notes go yesterday and how can I get them back?

Hi call Apple! / request an Apple call back, go to the Apple support pages, follow the route to get support for iPhone and request a call back. I spent some time on the phone with one of their support teams yesterday and we fixed it. Up to that point, I had tried adjusting various settings and removing Yahoo from my iPhone mail account, none of it worked and I didn’t want to go any further, like deleting the Notes app or anything else more drastic - without speaking to Apple first.

What we ended up doing - which worked - was erasing my phone and reinstalling everything and finding an iCloud backup from BEFORE the day everything went weird and restoring from that backup, I lost a few days of notes, messages and photos but it brought back all my notes up to that point. My phone had done a backup on the day things went weird so I ignored that one as it had the Notes showing from that day when it went weird so it was not my usual notes and that was all that was showing in iCloud too and not before. So check you have an earlier backup from before the day it went weird, Apple can check this for you, they could see the dates of my earlier backups, so when I was reinstalling my phone from iCloud it showed me the recent backup dates and I chose the earlier one from about a week ago.

Yes it’s a Yahoo problem, but it is also a problem at Apple end, as the two working together are making people go through an update they don’t realise is going to affect their notes.

I’ve moved all my reinstated notes to Notes iCloud folder now and did a new backup once everything had reinstalled - good luck!!

I think the data is really gone; that password synch took place between apple's mail app and your yahoo account and since yahoo doesn't support the apple mail application, the notes data was not sent to the yahoo server and when the yahoo server synched back to the phone, it deleted the data that was saved locally on the phone for the notes app and overwrote the new info with the old. My next step is to call apple to see if they have a recovery process that backs up the data from the apple mail application. Ugh.

Where were the Notes? See the pic below. You will get your answer

The various options that you are referring ("the second text menue") to will exist only if your Notes are on iCloud or the "On My Phone" Folder.

The 2 pics below are self-explanatory.

If you're missing notes on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Notes are always synced through Google, iCloud, AOL, Exchange, Outlook, Yahoo or any Other email Account

Any data on your device that isn't synced regularly will be stored in your iCloud Backup. With Backup turned on, iCloud takes periodic snapshots of this data to make sure it's easy to restore any time you get a new device. Between syncing and backing up, all of your data is kept safe in the cloud.

This exact same thing happened to me today! I have tried calling yahoo and they say they don't support iOS apps like notes and this is an apple problem, but to me, I think this is a Yahoo server synching problem b/c my files from 2022 and before are available but they have deleted anything more recent, which I think happened during the password synch process. The woman I spoke with said they do not backup notes on their servers so there is no recovery possible. Please comment if you have found out a solution!

Thank you. To my knowledge I have only ever used Notes on my iPhone with them either saving to my phone or my iCloud. I have a Yahoo app which has always just run independently as one of my other email accounts. I’ve not had a problem with my Notes before but it seems to be a coincidence I was getting this pop-up request yesterday from my phone settings to enter my Yahoo password.

My iCloud has photos in it that I took yesterday, but all my recent notes from the last two years have gone, they’re not showing in my Notes app in any folder, there’s about 10 notes overall from years ago and as if they’ve come in from another/older account, and the same is showing in my ICloud. My usual Notes have disappeared. I’ve got Apple calling me later today so hopefully that will help….
