Direct annotation feature in keynote app in mac similar to powerpoint

I am a teacher so while taking online lecture needs to write directly on keynote app in mac with help of side car features by using my ipad air as input

can't copy and paste from pages to keynote I'm working on a slideshow of an essay written in pages, I want to copy and paste chunks of text but can't! I can paste into other apps like notes but NOT from pages to keynote. What is going on? This is an essential functionality for all applications of this sort - how can I not be allowed to do this basic functionality?
