Apple Intelligence on iPhone 14 why isn’t it there?

I want the iPhone 14 to have the Apple Intelligence, but it’s just not there. Why won’t Apple put it on iPhone 14? I have to go buy a new iPhone Thanks Apple

Because Apple Intelligence requires a phone with 8GB of RAM, which no phones except iPhone 15 Pro/15 Pro Max and all iPhone 16 models have. Your phone doesn't have the RAM, thus it simply cannot support Apple Intelligence. If you want an iPhone with Apple Intelligence, Apple will take your phone in trade or you can sell it privately and use the trade or sale money towards an iPhone which has the processing power to run Apple Intelligence.

Your phone does everything today, it did when it was new. Apple never suggested older models would get all new features and in fact they specifically suggest not all new features will work on all devices capable of running iOS 18. Expecting a two year old iPhone to be able to run the newest features, when the phone doesn't have the hardware required is just not going to happen.

Had you purchased an iPhone 15, it doesn't get Apple Intelligence either. You'd have to own a 15 Pro or 15 Pro Max. Being mad about owning a phone released 2 years ago, which doesn't have the hardware required to run Apple Intelligence, doesn't make a lot of sense. Often, the newest features introduced with the newest iPhones aren't available on previous models.

Apple would be happy to let you trade in your iPhone 15 towards the purchase of one of the iPhone 16 models, which can run Apple Intelligence.

1. All "Apple Intelligence" requests are processed by OpenAI online.

Wrong, you have to specifically allow requests to be sent to ChatGPT.

You control when ChatGPT is used and will be asked before any of your information is shared. Anyone can access ChatGPT for free, without creating an account.

Apple Intelligence - Apple

As far as I understand Apple is paying OpenAI something for this service, but in exchange they refer OpenAI new customers to purchase a full subscription.

What information do you have that Apple is paying OpenAI for something? For users that choose to make heavy use of ChatGPT, you can subscribe to the higher tier service they offer to:

  • Allow access to more advanced models
  • Higher limits for photo or file uploads
  • Real time conversation with ChatGPT

It could be a combination of two, who knows. It has nothing to do with RAM/CPU/etc.

Wrong again. It has everything to do with RAM, Processor Speeds, and the extra GPU cores needed for the on-device processing that is essential for the Apple Intelligence implementation on the iPhone. Any phone can use the ChatGPT app for server side processing of requests, but for privacy/security it is on-device processing that makes Apple Intelligence far superior, but does require more resources.

The iPhone 14 Pro is more than capable enough.

It is not! I have seen Apple Intelligence attempt to run on unsupported devices and it is dreadful. Slow operations across the board with crashes that require the device to be constantly rebooted. If Apple put it on those phones, instead of users whining about not having the feature, you would see these complaints here:

  • Why did Apple slow my phone down.
  • My phone is crashing all the time.
  • Apple made my phone unusable so I have to purchase a new one

Apple Intelligence: If more processing power is needed than what is available locally, Apple uses so-called Private Cloud Compute (PCC) servers ...

You misunderstanding is thinking that Apple Intelligence is a singular feature found in ChatGPT for asking questions and getting a server side answer that is sent to you. Apple Intelligence is a package of features that requires more processing power that is found on the newer devices, most of which are done on device.

The choice is yours, use the server side processing of ChatGPT to answer your questions or get a phone that can handle the features of Apple Intelligence. Ever since the first computer, Software has always outpaced Hardware and that is going to continue in the future.

Because it does not have the Hardware capable of running it effectively. Note that Apple Intelligence uses On Device Processing for AI that requires the additional CPU speed, GPU cores with the necessary RAM for the increased demand placed on the phone. Similar to when Visual Lookup was made available to iPhone with the adequate power, but not the iPhone X or earlier. Nothing unusual in the technology world where Software has always outpaced Hardware ever since the very first computer and will continue well into the future. Welcome aboard the technology train.

Welcome to the thread! The post you are responding to is approaching a year old.

Hopefully, the poster has their answer by now too, even if they’re not particularly fond of that answer.

That answer being no. There is no Apple Intelligence on iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Apple Intelligence requires iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or later, for use with iPhone.

The list of supported iPhone, iPad, and Mac equipment has been posted in this thread on various occasions.

I don’t believe it’s processing power - link Siri to ChatGPT in a handshake does not take RAM and GPU etc etc.

Apple Intelligence runs locally, on the Neural Engine of Apple A17 Pro, Apple A18, and Apple A18 Pro processors, and on Apple M-class processors.

Apple Intelligence can optionally connect to Apple Private Cloud servers for more complex queries, if that is enabled and configured.

ChatGPT uses OpenAI servers, and does not run locally.

Kepbem wrote:

Why can the ChatGPT app run fine on a 14? I pay for pro and the app is fine. Apple being Apple I suppose.

The answer is simple. The app is nothing more than a web portal where your communication and information provided is uploaded to their servers where all the processing power is done and returns those results to you. All your data and requests are being stored on those servers. The app simple sends and receives data and requires very little processing power on your device and similar to browsing web pages. That is why the app is available and the only option for devices that lack the processing power.

With Privacy and Security in mind, Apple took a much different approach with Apple Intelligence where the vast amount of the processing power is done on your device and your data and information is also kept private. On the occasion that outside servers are needed for additional processing power then you use Apple Private Cloud Compute where you are in charge of that information and have control over your data and can even view the Intelligence Report.

Hopefully that clears it up.

  • Which approach do you think is the best approach when it comes to protecting user's data?
  • Is Privacy/Security of your data important to you?
  • Do you know where your ChatGPT data is at, how long it is being stored, what is being done with it, and if it includes any personal identifiable information?

Here is some additional relevant information if you are interested for a better understanding Apple Intelligence and why it is much different than the ChatGPT app:

Then you didn't read this thread, where it has been explained that only iPhones with at least 8GB of Ram can run Apple Intelligence. Your iPhone doesn't have the requisite hardware. It really is that simple and shouldn't be hard to understand.

Every year, ALL cell phone manufacturers (not just Apple) bring out newer phones, with newer features. To expect that models released a couple years earlier will get the newest features, when those phones don't have the hardware required to support the newest features is an unfortunate and unrealistic expectation.
