Notes Crashing after updating to Sequoia 15.0.1 (24A348)

After updating my M1 Ultra to Sequoia 15.0.1 (24A348) Notes will launch but hangs on launch. I've been able to unsync notes from iCloud and then reenable iCloud sync. That does help for a couple of days, but eventually, it starts to hang after launch again. Then I have to start the unsync/resync iCloud process over again. My other devices are not affected.

I second this. M1 MacBook Air 8GB, since updating to Sequoia. Every time I am using it for a heavy day of class notes, I eventually get the beach ball spinning and the Notes App becomes unresponsive.

  • Edit: The memory usage does seem to slowly grow with time as well. For example a fresh start of Notes for me uses 333mb. But when it crashes (like above), it's using 866mb and it slowly ticks upwards until I force close it.

Power usage is also ridiculous:

It won't resolve itself until I force quit it via Activity Monitor. I have reported the crash report to Apple probably almost a dozen times now.

Also in previous versions of MacOS the excessive energy usage was always a thing for me (which alone really is unacceptable) but now this crashing issue makes me want to consider switching to another notes app - which I'd really like to avoid given I'm comfortably entrenched within the ecosystem and prefer the E2E encryption of Advanced Data Protection.

In the past it was suggested to avoid using "List view", so I've habitually adopted used the much worse "Gallery view" to help performance.

Also this may be relevant but my Notes app is using up about 3.2GB of iCloud storage, so I consider myself a fairly heavy user.
