I too would recommend Affinity Photo. At present, you can trial it for six months without a purchase, and at 79 USD, it should not represent a fortune.

I have owned Affinity Photo since its introduction several years ago and receive no benefit from Affinity for mentioning it here.

What do you consider "cost a fortune?"

The Adobe Photography Plan is $9.99/month and includes Photoshop, Lightroom & 20GB storage. The latest release is always available. I consider it well worth the cost.

  • Affinity Photo is currently $69.99 one-time license. Sometimes there are discounts. Just remember that when a new version is released you would need to pay for an upgrade.
  • Pixelmator is currently $49.99. One time license, new releases require upgrade purchase.
  • Photomator is $99.99 one-time purchase; or $7.99/month or $29.99/year subscription.
  • Luminar Neo - I do not recommend Skylum products. They have a history of underdelivering promised features and flatly abandoning products. I got burned multiple times by them. And compared to other photo editors I think their products are underwhelming.

If you want free, try out GIMP.

What do you consider a 'functional photo editor'? What sort of editing are you looking to do? Apple's Photos offers basic global editing tools. If you want local editing, gradients, luminosity masks, etc., then you need something more powerful. If that's the case, you really can't go wrong with Adobe CC. In the US, Best Buy has a 1-year subscription for Photoshop/Lightroom for $79.
