Mac OS Photos extremely slow - any alternatives?

I have a 100 GB photo library, freshly created, and Photos is slow to the point of being unusable. It takes about 30 seconds to open, and switching from various left hand pane categories also takes about 30 seconds. Deleting photos from the Recently Deleted doesn't work, and identifying people takes forever, basically freezing the app in the process. I've long found Photos to be a horrid experience.

What are the alternatives for browsing, categorizing and light editing?

For that budget: Google Photos. It's added some editing features of late. Graphic Converter isn't really the same as Photos, but it is an amazing tool for the price. It's organisation isn't that capable, and doesn't share across devices. There are much better options but not at that budget, and especially if you won't do subscriptions. Check out Mylio, for instance.

Do you shoot raw or jpeg? With DSLR or a point and shoot? With a phone?

How many images and how much does your library grow per year?

Thanks. Jpeg, DSLR and phone, currently about 20,000 images, with a few videos. Basic editing. Face recognition is important. Budget - free to $50, no subscriptions.
