How to fix broken Transparency model with accomodations on AirPods Pro 2 and iOS18?

The transparency mode with accommodations are effectively broken since iOS 18 and 18.0.1.

The transparency with amplification, environment noise canceling and speech amplification do not work at all. I have used custom audiogram, and reset both headphones and settings, but it is still the same.

Is there a trick I can make this work?

i was using Transparency mode with audiogram applied, this allowed me to use AirPods for both content and as hearing aids, don't have to change in-ear device when someone talks to me. now it's broken after updating to 18.1. big dealbreaker issue for me.

I’m experiencing exactly the same problem. 3 days ago transparency mode stopped working after being perfect (apart from the regular whistling) for the past ~2 years. I have been using the APP2 as pseudo hearing aids whilst watching TV or for casual meetings - I set up my audiogram day 1 and it’s always worked fine. For some reason, possibly due to the recent firmware update, it has abruptly stopped working. I even bought a new paid of APP2 thinking my original ones were broken, but I found those to behave exactly the same. I assume the original functionality has been dropped to accommodate the new capabilities advertised but those capabilities are not yet available in the UK. Very annoyed is being mild.

I would take a stab at it and say you have updated to IOS 18.1 whether you realise it or not. If your iPhone has been set to auto update 18.1 will prevent you adding an Audiogram in Transparency Mode. Firmware 7B21 is not a problem as that is what I am using now with my iPhone on 17.7.1.

I set a new pair of AirPod Pro 2s up for my big sister today in the UK and she is really happy with them. She cannot believe that she can hear music properly again. She has mild to moderate hearing loss.

Annoyingly she had her update settings set to automatic on her iPhone and was on IOS 18.1 so I just set them up on her iPad mini that was on IOS 16.

If you have another Apple device that is running an older IOS you can set them up with no restrictions. An iPhone 12 is new enough. My wife's iPad 2018 works too.

The 18.1 update prevents you for using them in the way you have been in the UK.

I tried all sorts of options. The headphones switching are not an issue. - When i set up the APP2, they work a bit and later on they stop and revert to just noise canceling. They also seems to switch modes intermittently.

I will now try to delete custom audiogram options, and reset everything again, but I have little hope it will actually work.

Both iOS 18 and Sequoia are load of cr*p currently. They both have loads of issues and I can't really understand why they decided to release these.

I doubt you will get them working using 18.1. My iPhone is still running 17.7.1 and my M2 Mac Mini runs Ventura. I never update until the bugs are ironed out sometimes leaving it for up to two years and I am very glad that I wasn't tempted.

Had I updated to Sonoma on my Mac Mini it would have cost me almost £500 for an update to our restaurant ordering system. Why would I do that?

I tried with or without audiogram. It doesn't work. Works a bit, and then it returns back to noise canceling. The feature is deliberately blocked.

Yes it is. It was an FDA requirement when they approved the use of the AirPods as hearing aids in the US. The only simple way to get around it that I know of is to use a different iPhone or iPad running an older IOS than 18.1.

I have only read that Apple are now preventing you rolling back to an older IOS and it's not something I have tried because I don't need to. If you have a backup of your iPhone that is prior to updating to 18.1 it would be worth a try.

Have you selected from and performed the reset options shown here? I believe there may be some conflicts between the programming options before iOS 18 and those existing under iOS 18 that are getting in the way. My current issue under 18.0.1 is not being able to complete the creation of a custom audiogram. The problem is that I'm repeatedly prompted to connect compatible headphones, but I don't have any headphones to connect that are more compatible than APP2.

I’m still trying options for configuring transparency while waiting for Apple to provide the announced hearing test capabilities. I made progress by using the disconnect option in Bluetooth settings on my Mac, which was also configured to connect automatically to the AirPods Pro 2. Have you tried ensuring that the iPhone is the only device paired with the AirPods Pro 2 while adjusting options?

I have still not managed to fix this. The transparency mode does not work at all. When I switch to it, it briefly works, and then crashes back to noise canceling.

Adaptive noise control also doesn't work, or work flaky.

I am also noticing headphone dropouts and other issues.

The headphone accommodations do not work in any case, with custom audiogram or default Apple boosts.

I am really annoyed by this, and I am certain Apple knows about this issue and chooses not to fix it. I have no problems with that, but I would very much like to be able to revert to older OS that actually worked.

I think you might be right... The Apple knows thus, but they didn't enable graceful failover. Just disabled the feature as IS. What I have now is APP2 that are behaving like a any other, not that good, earphones.

The transparency and other modes do not work at all, the only thing that does is noise canceling, but I did notice that the performance of ANC is much lower than before. Before they were better than my Bose QC 35 II, and now they are significantly worse.

I was thinking of buying a new pair too, but that didn't make sense as the problem seemed it came with the pdate. So I ordered new Bose QC SE.
