iPad 1 ios5.1.1 can’t connect to setup.iCloud.com

When trying to reenter my iCloud password, I receive an error that Verification Failed due to the certificate for the server is invalid (setup.iCloud.com). I tried resetting and reinstalling and then when I try to connect to connect to my iCloud account, it says server not found. This all started in mid September or so. Is that connection no longer viable (server retired)?

That iPad 1st gen (2010) with iOS 5 is well below the minimum required versions for access to iCloud.

The minimum version required is iOS 10, or later depending on the feature:

I wouldn’t expect iOS 5 to be able to connect to much of anything on the network.

Few if any apps will support that far back, as that iPsd is 32-bit.

We’ve been on a treadmill of updates for security fixes the past couple of decades, and with no signs of slowing.

Folks get cranky when they get breached, too.

Among other issues here, the oldest gear just can’t make secure authenticated connections, which means retaining that support causes a security downgrade for everybody. Opening up the insecure path opens up opportunities for shenanigans against everybody.

Having been involved in similar work elsewhere, back-porting those fixes and updates to the older gear is a massive effort, too. Here, back-porting would involve going from code written for newer gear and 64-bit processors to a 32-bit platform, among other wrinkles.

2FA was working last year. Maybe a work-around at Apple stores, using a firewalled machine?

Minimum system requirements by feature

To use iCloud you need at least iOS 10 on iPhone 5, iPod touch (6th generation), iPad (4th generation) or iPad mini 2; watchOS 3 on an Apple Watch; macOS Sierra 10.12 on a Mac; tvOS 4 on an Apple TV (4th generation); or visionOS 1 on an Apple Vision Pro.

I have this same problem. I had to do a factory restore of my iPod touch, 5.1.1. I'm not trying to do anything on the network *other* than signing in to iCloud. I have all of my old apps, but can't install them without the iPod being signed in.

The issue is that Apple shut down the server at setup.icloud.com. I wonder if they could set up an "alias" at that site (they still have it active), redirecting old ipods/iphones to the current server?

Troubleshooting “iPad 1 ios5.1.1 can’t connect to setup.iCloud.com” Error:

Turn Off VPNs:

Are you using a VPN? If so, turn it off. That should do the trick.

Unless required for work or school, trash all VPNs and refrain from using them. They just get in the way on Apple devices, and this is a pure example of how and why.
