Apple Music crashing after iMac Sequoia OS 15 update

Hi All,

I installed the Sequoia OS 15 update on my M3 iMac, and now Apple Music crashes after about 15 minutes of use, when I try to drag a song into another playlist. Is this a known bug, and if so, when is the new update coming out to fix it?

Thanks,

Steven

I updated the software OS hoping it would fix the problem. Now instead of crashing instantly when dragging a song to another playlist window, now it crashes when moving a song in a single playlist as well! Good job apple!

My music is also on an external My Passport 4T drive which is connected to ACASIS 7 Ports 36W USB 3.0 Data Hub with individual On/Off switches and a power adapter. When playing music I only have the one port which contains the drive that holds my music (MP3s) active. There’s 355.71GB of music files within that drive, I don’t imagine there’s a limit(?)

I’ve swapped ports on the hub with another same make drive and though it does not contain MP3 music files ( they’re MP4 movie files) nor is it linked to the Music app the files within show a dropdown menu when I right click on them and the files respond to the commands. I’ve removed the drive from the hub and connected directly to my iMac in a different port and still the same result.

Sorry you are having issues as well. I am not sure if I posted on here, but a month ago I spent 3 hours with a senior advisor running tests and doing video recordings to catch the crashes. He said to be patient, when when there was an OS update he would let me know and "hopefully" it would fix it. There hasn't been an update, and I still have all the same problems. Can't even change the names of my playlists. The name changes in the playlist window, but not on the left playlist list, and then a few seconds later, they both revert to the old name. Still crashing when dragging songs in the playlist. I made one playlist, then it just went away. It's funny, I saw the new M4 Laptops have come out, with a hefty $3200 price tag for the top of the line unit. Why would I pay that high price if I know one of my most used programs won't work?

I'm having the same problem. It started with the Sequoia update. Sequoia 15.1 (I think) solved the problem. Meanwhile, I got a new Macbook Pro at the end of November. When I did the Sequioa 15.2 update the problem started all over again on my new Macbook. This is very frustrating becasue I use spoken word recordings all day every day I work with clients. It's also frustrating that the problem got fixed after an update and now is a problem again. I went through and got rid of potential softward that could interfere with Music. It was only the update that fixed it. Apple broke it, fixed it and broke it again or so it appears.

I can confirm that the bug is still present in 15.3 and remains quite reproducible; Music will crash when I attempt to drag a song with "Unknown Album" property into another playlist. Such media will be probably be present in the Music tree under "Unknown Artist".

An effective workaround is to select all songs in the playlist and assign an Album name (likely related to the playlist name :)). Songs may then be dragged to another playlist and the media file will be moved to a newly created directory in the tree.

I found no anomalies in exported playlists, file names and media file metadata (Unix stat(1) command).

Apple seems to be enamoured with AI these days (I turned it off). Perhaps their AI may help them to do elementary QA in regression testing and debugging. Then again, perhaps it may not ...

I just downloaded 15.3 and yes, music is still broken. Mine won't even open. It's been this way since 15.2. I'm frustrated knowing they sent out another update and didn't fix such a big problem. I've been using the quicktime player, but it's so clumsy doing it this way. I need it for my work and so this has been difficult.

For the users who have experienced this it was due to the song not having an Album associated with it. Is that the case for you? If it is, then it would appear to be a bug, but until it is resolved, you can add anything in the album field to prevent the crash. I haven't had a crash in Music on Sequoia, but all of my songs to have an album listed for each song.

I'm having the same issue as the guys who mentioned the music app on Mac keeps crashing when moving songs to another playlist. Mine crashes even when I try to rearrange the song prder in a playlist. It literally crashes every time since I've upgraded the OS X to the latest one. My crash report is below, can someone please advise what this report shows and what I should do to rectify this issue, the report below is like another language to me, don't underdstand any of it, maybe someone on here can make sense of it and reply back to me? Thanks guys!

I’ve upgraded to Sequoia 15.1.1 from 15.1 and the problem I’ve previously outlined remains the same even after connecting the external drive from my hub to directly into the port on the back of my iMac.

This particular community is focused on Music app crashing specifically when dragging and dropping music into another playlist after upgrading to Sequoia 15. I won’t even attempt the drag and drop just to see if my Music app would crash. I’m not a glutton for punishment. I do believe when Apple answers the problems between Music and Sequoia it will function at 100%.

I have an additional issue after upgrading to 15.1 then 15.1.1 and I was wondering if the people in this community had it as well. Spotlight Search and File Search are now nonfunctional. I’ve tested this a few times with different file names or folder names and get the same results.

I just used EtreCheck and got this report - as a major problem. Can anyone tell me what this means?

Kernel panics - This system has experienced kernel panics. This could be a sign of hardware failure.

Kernel Panics are either caused by a third party Kernel Extension that needs removed or could also be a sign of Hardware failure. The rest of the report will provide more details on what Kernel Extensions are installed and what the Kernel Panic is.

This started right after the Sequoia update. I don't use one drive, drop box, or clean my Mac. I will download the software and run it. Prettybird, I had kernel panics on my lemon iMac 2020 for years, and they could never reproduce at the store. I finally sent engineers reports on the problems and they replace my lemon. After 3 years of daily problems.

Hi Mac Jim,

Thank you for all of the information. Most of my music is on an external seagate 5 tb drive, that is powered by wall outlet as well as the usb hub it is plugged into. USB hub is plugged into a self powered hub that is connected to my M3. This is the 2nd hub. I have a 2 TB stick drive installed in it.

"USB C Hub for iMac 24 inch 2021/2023, Minisopuru iMac USB Hub Support M.2 NVMe SSD, iMac Accessories for iMac M1/M3, iMac USB Adapter with USB C 10Gbps, USB A 3.2, SD/TF, M.2 SSD."

This 2 TB drive disconnects sometimes when asleep. I run diagnostics on that and the 5 TB when there is an issue. I didn't have any Apple Music problems until the update though. I spent 3 hours with a senior Apple tech man, and he said this is a known issue, and they are working on an update fix.
