Screenshot highlight window won't disappear

When taking a screenshot with 'cmd+5', the highlight window appears and I'm able to adjust the size and shape, and then hit 'return' to take the screenshot. The screenshot saves successfully. However, when I take a screenshot using this method, instead of 'cmd+4' for example, the highlight does not disappear when I hit 'esc'. See attached screenshot showing the highlight window remaining in place. The only thing I've found that works to remove it is to restart the computer which is a little frustrating and very inconvenient. Does anyone have a solution? All software is up to date. I'm not sure what else to try.

This same thing has been happening to me for about a week. I use the screenshot app that comes in the Utilities folder. Not only is it not recording an image, I have to restart my Macbook Pro in order to clear the highlight. This is a function I use on a regular basis, so this has been a big problem for me.

Does the Esc (Escape) key work to get unstuck from that place...?

For Screenshot shortcuts you should be using:

Shift + Command + 3

Space + Shift + Command + 3

Shift + Command + 4

Space + Shift + Command + 4

Shift + Command + 5

Have a look at > Take a screenshot on your Mac - Apple Support

If those 5 Shortcuts are not working or not working properly...?

Go to Apple > System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > Screenshots > click Restore Defaults > Done.
