I have Apple Watch 6 watchOS 9.6 and an iPhone 12 which I upgraded to 17.7. Now my watch does not sync with the iPhone and requires updating to iOS 18. How do I update apple Watch to the latest version of ios 17.7 supported?

I think you misunderstood my question. In order to update the watch to watchOS 11, you would have needed a phone that supported it.
i'm on the same boat. i updated my phone to 17.7 and now my watch says update required and i have to to update my phone to 18 before I can do that, which I dont want to do. Have you figured out a way around it?
Sorry, but this is not "Apple flaw". The software on the iPhone has to support the watchOS on the Apple Watch.
watchOS 11 requires an iPhone running iOS 18, watchOS 10 did need and iPhone capable of iOS 17, watchOS 9 - iOS 16, etc.
I agree. All I needed was 10. But instead, my watch basically stopped working after I upgraded to my phone to 17.7. If I wanted to upgrade to 18 I would just chose that instead of 17. I have an older phone, so I didn't want to go all the way to 18. So same as you, I was forced onto 18. Fortunately, so far, it seems ok.
You can upgrade your iPhone 12 to iOS 18, your should see this option on the Software Update page in the settings of your device:

you can only update the watch to the latest signed watchOS version for the watch in question
and watchOS11 requires an iphone with ios18
How did you update the Watch to a higher version of watchOS than your phone supports? I didn't think that was possible.

That’s right. But my watch was on 9.6 when I updated to iOS 17.7. Why didn't they upgrade to watchOS 10, but just stopped syncing?
