The tvOS 18.0 update basically bricked my Apple TV, my Siri remote, & even my Apple TV Remote through my iPhone.

Greetings. I have a 3rd Generation Apple TV 4K that comes with the USB-C Siri remote. I bought it back on February of 2023.

I love it, & everything was working near perfect, up until I updated it's tvOS to 18.0. Now all of a sudden, the directional up & down buttons as well as the center buttons on my Apple TV remote weren't working. I then had to rely on my Apple TV remote on my iPhone just to navigate (my iPhone is a iPhone 15 Pro Max; Also updated to iOS 18.0).

Even there, it has issues. Whenever I tap on its directional up button, everything automatically scrolls down. I had to quickly press it's center button just to access menu's & apps.

Of course, I tried everything when I got in touch with Apple support:

  • Resetting the remote.
  • Unplugging the Apple TV for 30 seconds to a minute.
  • Unplugging the HDMI cable from both Apple TV & my TV.
  • Using another HDMI cable.
  • Charging my remote using a USB-C cable & a wall adapter/block.
  • Changing format to 1080p under Video & Audio.

Even tried to reset my Apple TV through factory settings & used reset & update. STILL. HASN'T. WORKED.

And now, I can't even use my Apple TV Remote through my iPhone anymore. Now my Apple TV is completely bricked in general, with no way to access it.

I have AppleCare+ on it, by the way, which doesn't expire until February 19th in 2026 in which Accidental Damage, Hardware Service, Express Replacement & 24/7 Priority Access is covered.

Has this happened to anyone else?

This is by far the worst update Apple ever released. Made my Apple TV 4K noting but unusable. The native video player used in apps is not working, only custom made players that are usually wonky. Subtitles are not visible in any apps, sound glitches hard, screen mirror stopped working, airpods keep disconnecting, most apps are crashing, my new siri remote stopped responding, screensavers are not refreshing and got stuck into one clip only. How can I downgrade my Apple TV? Never had such a bad experience with Apple’s updates as this one

i had my apple tv 3rd gen for years & it randomly got stuck into a boot loop one day 2 weeks ago. i called apple & the girl replaced it. the new one they sent also got stuck into a boot loop & the girl i spoke to sent me an email so i can ask her any questions if i had any. i sent her that it wasn’t working & i haven’t heard back at all in 5 days. i will have to end up calling. it’s 100% the 18.0 update bc it was working before i updated the new one to it. if i would have know ; i wouldn’t have updated it.

You can’t downgrade and what makes you think everyone is having this experience?

Just unplug your ATV from power for 5 minutes, plug it back in and restart. If that doesn’t help thens see if this link helps...

I’ve got an original Apple TV 4K.

I believe the problem is not with the Apple TV, but with the remote. my Apple TV came with one of those original black remotes. eventually, it would not stay charged for longer than a half a day so I ordered one of the new silver remotes.

which worked well for about eight months, and then suddenly it started doing exactly what you described: whenever I pressed on the up key, it would immediately scroll all the way down to the bottom of whatever field I was in. Usually in the settings app.

The only thing that fixed it was buying a new remote, and I had to buy two different ones until I finally got one that detected my Apple TV.

My issues haven't been as catastrophic as yours, but have been annoying none the less. Since my Apple TV automatically updated to tv OS 18.0, I have lost the ability to set the time per slide. I like the Classic/Dissolve transition. The "time per slide" is no longer an option. I prefer 20 seconds per slide. Now they speed by at 4.8 seconds per slide.

My Apple TV was totally bricked as well just have a flashing white light. After waiting 50 minutes after my appointment time at the store in Southampton, UK, I was told it could not be repaired and had to buy a new one despite protesting. The guy sent to repair it didn’t seem to know what to do

and had to consult. I was updating from 18 to 18.1. Thank you Apple your update cost me £140. My Apple TV had worked perfectly all day before I did the update.
