Whilst issues with updates are rare, there is always a possibility that something unexpected may happen during the update process.
Always ensure that you have a current iCloud or iTunes backup of your device before performing a system software update - as this is your insurance policy should something go drastically wrong. All that said, with the sole exception of the 2024 iPad Pro M4 - for which the iPadOS 18 update has been temporarily withdrawn by Apple - there are no reported issues with updating other compatible models of iPad to iPadOS 18.
“Risk”? There is risk in stepping outside.
You should always update your Apple device(s) to the most recent released operating system version. Doing so provides feature and security updates, and defect repairs.
