Problem with Apps

Whenever I have an app open and want to open another app, the app I already have open minimizes itself. For example, if I have my safari app open and go to open my messages app, my safari app will minimize itself and my messages will open. How do I make it to where if I open my messages app, my safari app will not minimize itself and stay up and open?
