Firewire to Thunderbolt 2 adapter?

It is unlikely that you can transfer full-length, full-size videos via the Memory Stick. Those would have been stored as digital video (DV) on tape, with the Memory Stick being just for still photos and short, low-resolution videos.

Starting from the iMac you need three adapters.

Then sadly, there is no guaranty that the used ThunderBolt 2 to FireWire adapter works or that the iMac will recognize the Sony Camcorder.

Personally I would look for an older Mac with FireWire ports or search the web for a USB Card Reader that accepts the Sony DCR-TRV240 Camcorders Memory Stick.

The camcorder apparently has analog video output (RCA, S-Video) and audio output (2 x RCA). So at a possible loss in quality, one could capture and re-digitize the output the same way one would capture video from a VCR.

You are correct the TRV240 model did not have a memory stick. Even with the adapters the Mac may not recognize the Sonny. The TRV240 is not on the iMovie "supported" list. I am considering purchasing an ELGATO Video Capture Card. It has it's short comings but I like the software and it should meet our needs.

The Elgato card is a reasonable alternative.

FWIW, the fact that the TRV240 is not on an iMovie supported camera list is meaningless. That list has never been comprehensive and the TRV240 wouldn't have been on it anyway because the list was/is only DV/HDV/AVCHD/H.264 camcorders, it never included Digital 8. Regardless, Digital 8 with an iLink (Firewire) connection to iMovie should work ... but as you discovered, with late model Macs you need 2 adapters to make the connection.

You can still find the Apple Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter at certain online sellers although they have gotten pricey due to demand.

The Sony DCR-TRV240 does not have a memory stick slot, it never used memory sticks.
