"Best Of" albums treated like compilations - recent IOS issue?

My issue is (I think) with IOS 17.5.1-17.6.1 (and possibly older releases - I have not tested this) running on my iPhone 12Pro. I cannot sync tracks from 'Best Of' albums (Artist = Album Artist) to my phone - either the sync process or the phone treats such tracks as if they were from a Compilation (Artist = some value; Album Artist = Various Artists), despite the fact that the Part of a Compilation box is not ticked, and despite the fact that that Artist and Album Artist are identical (and not Various Artists).

By contrast, my iPhone 8 running IOS 16.7.8 works exactly as it should, with respect to all issues of sync.

Example: Album: The Essential Isley Brothers; Track: Live It Up, Pts. 1 & 2; Artist = Album Artist = The Isley Brothers. I have examined the files with tag scanners, and there are no indications that this track or album should be treated as all or part of a Compilation. This is one example, but all tracks from Best Of albums are treated similarly.

Result:

  • iPhone 12Pro /IOS 17.6.1: track is added to one of several folders named Various Artists, as a subfolder of a folder named The Essential Isley Brothers; there is no entry for Isley Brothers in the high level Artists list. This is wrong!
  • iPhone 8/IOS 16.7.8: track is added to a folder named The Essential Isley Brothers as a subfolder of the Isley Brothers folder in Artists. This is correct!

Is anyone else seeing odd results like this?

iPhone 12 Pro, iOS 17
