How to convert HEIC files to PDF on Mac?

My iPhone takes HEIC images by default but they can't be opened on my parent's Windows PC. Is there any way to bulk convert heic to pdf on Mac so I can share the photos with my parent? I tried a few online HEIC to PDF converters but the image quality is greatly reduced. In addition, you can only convert one heic file to pdf at once.

P.S. It will be a big plus if any app or tool could be able to convert multiple heic files into one big PDF.

Thanks

I'm not sure why you want to convert still images from HEIC format to PDF format. PDF was originally designed to be a final output format. An apples-to-apples conversion would be from individual HEIC images to individual JPEG ones.

There are at least three ways to do batch conversions of HEIC to JPEG on the Mac.

  • If you are in Photos and you use File > Export, you can select JPEG as the format for all of the exported copies. This does not affect the photos in your Photos Library.

Let's say that you have HEIC photo files "loose" in the Finder, say because you exported copies from Photos using File > Export Unmodified Originals.

  • You can select them in the Finder and do a [right-click] > Quick Actions > Convert Image.
  • You can open them in Preview, select one or more photos in the Preview sidebar, and use File > Export … or File > Export Selected Images. (When you select multiple images, the name changes, and you must select the "Show Options" button in the dialog that comes up to see the output format options.

If you don't want to convert HEIC files on a regular basis, your parents might be able to open the files directly if they installed this extension on their PC.

You can also set your iPhone to capture new pictures and videos in JPEG and H.264 formats ("Most Compatible").

Using Automator to create a service is a very practical way to make full use of the built-in functions of your Mac to automate various tasks, including batch conversion of HEIC files to PDF. The benefit of this method is that once you set it up, each conversion can be completed very quickly and easily. Moreover, this process is completely carried out on your Mac, without uploading files to the cloud or using third-party HEIC to PDF converter, ensuring the security and privacy of files.

The specific steps are as follows:

  1. Open the Automator application on your Mac, usually in the Applications folder.
  2. In Automator, create a new document of type "Service".
  3. In the settings of the service, specify that this service will process "Image Files" in the "Finder".
  4. Then add a "Change Type" action to change these image files from HEIC format to PDF.
  5. Then you can add a "Merge PDF Pages" action so that all the separate PDF files are merged into a single PDF file.
  6. Save your service and give it a name, such as "Merge to PDF".

Once set up, you can select the HEIC files you want to convert in Finder, right-click, find the "Services" menu, and select the "Merge to PDF" you just created. In this way, all selected HEIC images will be automatically converted into PDF format and merged into one file.

When I first converted HEIC files to PDF on my Mac.I opted for the Preview method because I wanted something quick, and honestly, it worked perfectly! The first time I tried it, I was worried about the quality, but everything came out great. I had a lovely PDF ready to share in no time, and I was able to arrange the photos in the order I wanted.

You can use dedicated HEIC to PDF converter apps on a Mac or Windows PC. Just avoid using online HEIC to PDF converters. When you upload the heic images to a third-party website, you may inadvertently share sensitive images or personal information, which could be stored, misused, or exposed to unauthorized parties.

Additionally, online converters may have limitations in terms of file quality and functionality. They often compress or alter images during conversion, which can diminish visual quality and affect the readability of the resulting PDF.
