Pencil Pro with iPad Pro 11 M4: Overheats iPad & Drains Battery

Brand new Pencil Pro and iPad Pro 11" M4:

When using Pencil Pro in Notes, Safari & editing Photos, Pencil Pro will randomly cause screen Lagging, so severe that it takes several seconds after scrolling for screen to move. The longer the Lag, the hotter the back of the iPad gets, to the point where it's too hot to touch. This Lag & Overheating also causes a rapidly decreasing battery. The occurrences are random but happen repeatedly. Any thoughts on resolving?

I have exactly the same problem, and none of above mentioned issues work. When writing with apple pencil pro on my ipad pro M4, the screen becomes so warm, that it's not nice to continue writing on it.

I did not face this issue with my previous ipad air and pencil.

Ensure that your iPad has been updated to iPadOS 17.5.1.

If your iPad is not operating as expected, try a forced-restart of your iPad - as this will often clear an isolated software issue:

Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
  3. Press and hold the top button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.

Force restart iPad (models with the Home button)

Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.

If the problem persists after performing the restart, it may be necessary to reset your iPad settings. While this reset will not cause any loss of data, as a precaution, it is always wise to ensure that you have a current iCloud or iTunes backup before performing the reset:

When you are happy to proceed, you can perform the reset from iPad settings:

Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset All Settings

If the problem still doesn’t clear, the next step is to reset the iPad to factory settings:

Otherwise, you would be best advised to seek assistance directly from Apple Support. You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page. Alternatively and perhaps easier, you can initiate and manage your support cases using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed on your iPad, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

You might also visit the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) - where the technicians will be able to test and assess your iPad - and you can explore your available options:

Assuming that you purchased your iPad directly from Apple, you have 14-days within which the iPad can be unconditionally returned for exchange or refund. If you cannot easily resolve the problem, you would be well advised to use this opportunity while you remain able to do so. Upon expiry of 14-days, issues will be handled under Apple's standard warranty terms.

I found a fix to stop my iPad from overheating when using Pencil. For an unrelated issue, I turned off "Zoom" in "Accessibility" settings, and for some reason, I do not understand the logic, my iPad stopped overheating when using Pencil. Even if I try to make it overheat, it just doesn't. I'm back to loving my Pencil!!!

Thank you LotusPilot for your reply. I updated to 17.5.1 when setting up new iPad. A reboot will temporarily stop Pencil Pro from causing Lag, but I should not have to reboot a brand new system repeatedly throughout the day, let alone any long-term damage from overheating this could possibly cause. There's gotta be a disconnect/trigger somewhere between the Pencil Pro and the iPad Pro 11" M4 causing this behavior. I'd been using iPad Pro 11" First Gen with a Pencil 2 for years without experiencing these issues. Hope there's a fix soon, I already returned the Pencil Pro & iPad Pro 11 M4, identical issue on set #2.

I’m commenting on all the m4 overheating threads. I just got off the phone with Apple and they said this is the first they’re hearing about this. They don’t look on here lol. They want more people to call and report this so they can explore what’s happening. They are replacing my iPad btw. Sending one in the mail, and I’ll send mine back.
