It's NOT on your phone. It hasn't been released publicly. And when it is, you have to opt in to Apple Intelligence, IF you even own an iPhone which is eligible to get Apple Intelligence (iPhone 15 Pro/15 Pro Max and all iPhone 16 models). So don't opt in to it. There, problem solved.

If you didn’t specifically request Apple intelligence to be installed (you are put on a waiting list if you did) then you don’t need to turn anything off. It’s not there unless you specifically requested it. AI is opt-in, not opt-out.

And if you actually have an iPhone 15 (not 15 Pro or 15 Pro Max) then Apple intelligence is not available for your model anyway. Only iPhone 15 Pro and later can support it.

iPhone 13 is incapable of Apple Intelligence, though is already running ML for various features including embedded text recognition, and lifting the foreground subject from photos, among other features.

On iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and later, models which do support Apple Intelligence, it can be disabled.

Enabling and disabling is here:

Apple Intelligence is OFF by default. You must explicitly turn it on if you want to use it.

Plus they have an iPhone 15, not 15 Pro, so Apple Intelligence isn't an option for them anyway. So they should be happy.

Not sure if you just don't know the truth or if you are spending too much time on TikTok and Facebook. Yes, it can be disabled, but feel free to do as you wish. You can either get factual information from Apple directly below, or stick with the source of the false information you have chosen to believe. Hope this helps.

To turn Apple Intelligence off, go to Settings , tap Apple Intelligence & Siri, then tap the button next to Apple Intelligence.

There are 6 pages in this thread. And on just about every page of this thread, someone pops in, who didn't read past the first post, which if you had, you'd already know you have to OPT-IN to get Apple Intelligence on your iPhone. So don't EVER opt-in and you won't ever have it. And your phone already uses Artificial Intelligence as it is. Do you use Siri, ever? It uses Artificial Intelligence. Or have you turned Siri off on your phone completely? Do you take photos with your phone? If you do, it uses computational photography, which is guess what? Artificial Intelligence.

As this is a user to user only forum, we don't honestly care what your next smart phone will be. But if you think ANY smart phone won't have Artificial Intelligence built in, think again. I'm sure there are non-smart flip phones you can buy at a discount store, which may be a better alternative for you.

Ps: If you have stopped updating at iOS 17, there's a good chance you don't even own an iPhone which is capable of running Apple Intelligence anyway. To get Apple Intelligence, you'd have to own an iPhone 15 Pro or 15 Pro Max to begin with.

You’ll want to acquire a feature phone, and sell your Apple gear.

That’s the only way to avoid AI, ML, and LLM, and that’s not even entirely certain.

Various AI, ML, and LLM features have been around for a while, and iPhone makes particular use of the capabilities provided by these algorithms. Scanning text from images, lifting the subject of photos, identifying people and pets, voice to text, and other existing capabilities of iPhone are all based on what you want removed.

As for the Apple Intelligence features recently being marketed, that is entirely opt-in.

Alternatively, AI could have summarized an answer from the previous replies in the thread here too, and probably also avoided your incorrect assumption about the forum participants: we’re not folks that work for Apple, and have no means to remove a feature provided by Apple. Apple may or may not read postings around here, and seldom replies, as well.

The post you are replying to is from May 2024, back when iOS 17 was current.

Hopefully, they’ve gotten their answer in the ensuing replies.

While your particular iPhone 15 Pro Max hardware is capable of Apple Intelligence, iOS 17 is not.

Apple Intelligence is opt-in, and requires iOS 18. It is not available on iOS 17.

Other machine-learning-based features are present in various iOS versions, including in iOS 18 and iOS 17.

And there is no downgrade from iOS 18 to iOS 17.

You think you will avoid AI by switching to a different platform? Think again. It’s everywhere including the other platforms. Your only option is to simply not use it. With Apple AI it’s opt-in, not opt-out. If you want it you have to turn it on. If you don’t want it you don't have to do anything, It’s off by default.

You really need to evaluate the source of the information you are receiving and maybe look for something more reliable. Not even sure if you have read any of the posts here in the directly related thread. You are automatically opted out and would need to opt in even if you had a phone that supported it, which likely is not even the case.

Yeah, my current Apple products will be my last. The more any company pushes AI the more of a Luddite I become. Already ditched my AWU, selling my MBP, and once I find a suitable dumb cellphone, goodbye iPhone.

You do realize that Apple Intelligence is OFF by default and you would have to actually turn it on before it would be available. If you don't have at least an iPhone 15 Pro, you wouldn't even have the option to turn it on if you wanted too.

Anyways, good luck with your search.

No.

I understand it is part of an upcoming update.

It is already there. Maybe not in the traditional sense – of computers doing human-level, symbolic reasoning (like researchers originally thought was the goal), but you see it in things like

  • Siri's voice recognition
  • The Photo app grouping together related photos, and music, on its own, to create Moments
  • Map apps learning where you go frequently, and suggesting destinations for you in widget displays
  • Optimized charging, where the phone learns your use patterns so as to delay charging until the last moment

Quite aside from whatever iOS and the iPhone are doing, a lot of companies like Google and social media outfits are mining whatever data they can collect about you. If you wonder why it seems like every store in the world requires a "loyalty card" to get discounts, and is trying to push you to use their app, it's because they also want to collect, and crunch, data about you.

Banks use AI, too – if you have a credit card from a major issuer, they probably have "AI" programs running on their computers that look for unusual patterns of activity and suspend cards accordingly.

If your iPhone is an SE like your profile states you don't have to worry about AI at all. Your SE will not support it. Only iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone Pro Max, and later models will be able to use it.

But a direct answer is yes, the user can opt-out of using AI.

Where is Apple response to this persistant and legitimate desire of their customers to be able to control AI use on their phone?

What specifically are you talking about:

  • Face ID
  • Touch ID
  • Siri Suggestions
  • Detecting Faces in Photos
  • Detecting Objects in Photos (animals, plants, etc)
  • Map suggestions
  • Auto Correct when typing
  • Copying Objects from Photos
  • Voice Recognition

These are all forms of Artificial Intelligence. If you are specifically talking about Apple Intelligence, then you should know it hasn't even been released yet. In Apple's preview of the service where requests are made to services such as ChatGPT, you have to specifically allow each request, so there is nothing to shut off there. You just don't allow it in the first place.
