Contacts disappeared

Hi!

I recently purchased more iCloud storage to be able to update my iPhone 11 Pro Max to the latest software. As soon as I finished purchasing the plan my phone’s software would not load (black screen with white circle and boot looping Apple logo). When the phone powered back on, all of the Apple app icons were invisible but usable, all of the contacts from the last 8+ years are missing, and iCloud only has 1 contact (“My Card” missing the phone number). After restarting the phone only the icons were restored.

Trouble shooting has been:

-checking mail -> accounts under settings

-toggled iCloud contacts sync off and on

-toggled each email account contact off and on

-signing out of and into iCloud account on device

-rebooting

-updating to latest software

-resetting network settings

-making sure that all groups of contacts are selected

-changing region, language, and time zone

-editing a saved contact’s phone number

to no avail.

The kicker is that the contacts will show after creating a new text message and typing in a name, but after sending the message there is only the phone number. Emergency Contacts are still available with the correct information.

After comparing settings to an older device I noticed the option “On My iPhone” is missing under settings and the Contact group.

Also, a local prefix has been added to phone numbers, when the original contacts were not saved with one. My best guess is that the numbers are not being recognized as the same number.

Are there any steps that I have missed to get my contacts back?

(The screenshots show an example of the pinned contact under a new text.)

What is your default Contacts account? If none, please add an email account and enable contacts.

Use iCloud.com to restore and recover iCloud information

You can use iCloud.com on a computer to recover recently deleted files or restore an earlier version of information that was automatically archived in iCloud.

Contacts on iPhones and smartphones are not stored locally but are synchronized with email accounts. The primary storage is on the email server, with a local copy on the device for offline access. Syncing allows changes made on any device to be updated across all connected devices. You can sync contacts with various email providers, enabling access from multiple devices. This method ensures convenience and seamless management of contacts across platforms.

When you add and enable the Contacts feature on your iPhone, it provides you with the ability to sync your contacts with a specific email account. This email account can be from various providers such as Google, iCloud, AOL, Exchange, Outlook, Yahoo or any Other email client server that supports contact synchronization.

Hi! Thank you for your reply.

Before updating the storage my default was “On My iPhone” as shown below (when toggling off iCloud Contacts). I have also checked and toggled off-> on the contacts accounts listed, but they are not in any account.

The iCloud account only has the 1 contact listed, which is “My Card”, and it is missing my phone number though it has a suggested by Siri to add it.

Thank you again but checking the mail accounts under the settings is the first thing listed under the original troubleshooting steps.

I’ve owned only iPhones for over a decade. However, I can understand the confusion if an individual is switching from an Android device that solely stores content via file paths for external (SD) and internal storage. Hopefully this will guide someone in that circumstance in the future!

The contacts were available just before upgrading iCloud storage and the boot loop occurred. No other settings were changed before that. Under my iCloud account there is only a “My Card” listed; that contact (for me) is missing the information that was originally there and using a contact backup (from iCloud) did not work, either.

I appreciate your efforts and any other help would be much obliged.
