USB 3 camera connection kit not working with iPad 8th generation

I am working with an iPad 8th generation model A2270, and a brand new Lightning to USB Camera adapter. OS is 17.4.1 on the tablet. I am trying to use the tablet with a USB MIDI cable to a Casio keyboard. I also have an older iPad model A1893 also with OS 17.4.1.

When I plug the adapter into an apple 20W power supply then attach to the 8th gen iPad, I get no pass through charging, the older iPad picks up the charging properly. Connecting the USB MIDI cable, the 8th gen does not pick up the MIDI cable so I get no connection to the keyboard. The older iPad picks it up and passes the MIDI data properly. also when I plugged the adapter into the older unit, I got a notification asking I wanted to update the adapter, which I said yes to. The 8th generation gave the same results as it had before and after said update.

any suggestions as to how I can get this cable and adapter working with the 8th gen iPad?

Older threads suggested it was a problem with the apple update (that was to OS 16.x.x) but both iPads are running the same system.
