Extra steps & stairs

When using my riding lawn mower with iPhone in my pocket & watch in my truck the pedometer app records the mowing as steps. Merges with my actual steps and distorts the value of the data. It impresses my cardiologist but it’s a false impression.

Why your iPhone might track stairs climbed and why some actions might be misinterpreted:

Counting Steps vs. Stairs:

  • Your iPhone uses a motion sensor called an accelerometer to track your movement. It can't differentiate between climbing stairs and other activities that involve similar motions.
  • Climbing stairs involves a distinct change in height with each step. When you get on or off a lawn mower, your phone might misinterpret that change in height as climbing stairs, especially if the mower seat is relatively high.

Why Pedals Don't Count:

  • Pressing pedals on a lawn mower (clutch, brake, or accelerator) involves pushing your foot down but doesn't involve a significant change in height. The motion sensor in your phone wouldn't register this as climbing stairs.

In Short:

  • Sudden changes in height can be misinterpreted as stairs climbed by your iPhone's step counter.
  • Simple up-and-down motions, like pressing pedals, usually aren't counted as stairs.
