iPhone 13 Pro Max won't connect to cellular after iOS 17.4.1 update

Like many others, after the iOS update to 17.4.1 my phone was unable to connect to cellular. Phone showed SOS mode. No phone calls or messaging. iPhone 13 Pro Max and AT&T for cellular.

No cellular connection after IOS17.4.1 despite showing 5G/LTE connected.

Have spent hours troubleshooting, including with AT&T support. Have tried the following (many of these steps multiple times):

  1. Reset Network settings
  2. Erase and Reset phone
  3. Turn airplane mode on/off
  4. Powered off phone/turned back on
  5. Restored phone as new
  6. Restored phone from backup
  7. AT&T new eSims assigned
  8. AT&T shows no issues with their diagnostic tools. No outages in the area. Other 2 phones in same household updated to new IOS without issues. AT&T escalated trouble ticket with estimate of 2-3 days before we get contacted.

In meantime, went to local Apple Store in desperation for assistance (use this device for work purposes so it was causing major issues). Sales person stated that since the new update occurred they have been getting several people a day coming in with this same issue (albeit it’s a very rare issue). Was told the only solution to fix issue was to swap out the phone. No further details provided on root cause. I had Apple Care on the phone and they were able to switch out the phone for me in store.

I have since been successful in setting up the replacement phone. No issues at this time. Able to now make phone calls and iMessage.

Agreed its not always the IOS, but mine has essentially become unusable on the Cellular Network.. I reboot, it connects to 5G for a few minutes, down grades to LTE ... then drops the network ...

Additionally, its driving a reboot of the phone (two year old phone) starting this past weekend. Nothing else on the phone has really changed...

It appears there's some kind of software failing here ...

xactly same issue on my Iphone 13 Pro Max.

Run Diagnostics & Repair , Enhanced logging.

Multiple full reset

Store visit for a full hardware and software ( Mobile resource inspector scan). All checked out green.

New SIM from ATT.

Nothing solved the problem.

Finally today spend 2.5 hours with Service Advisor to get an acknowledgment that it is an known issue and they don't have a resolution yet as they are still investigating the cause.

Hopefully Apple can fix this for us. I cannot just be ask to buy new iphone for their buggy IOS 17.4.1 updates

I have this EXACT same issue. My husband spent all weekend trying to get his phone connected to ATT service. Apple is sending him a phone to arrive in 3-5 days. ATT says they can't help at all! This ruined my Mother's Day. We have been back and forth from ATT and Apple all weekend long. Have you not had any issues with your new phone? Luckily, my husband's phone was still under warranty because Apple said there is nothing wrong with it when they ran the diagnostics. ATT's solution was to "wait it out." Also, they wanted to send us an old Android! I see you posted over a month ago...thanks ATT for the wait it out solution.

It's not always the iOS update's fault!  Many things can cause phone problems.  If you tell people you think it's an iOS update, it might make it harder to fix or find a solution for the real issue.

Remember, the right question often leads to the solution!

iOS updates aim to enhance user experience, boost security, and fix bugs rather than disrupt core features. The majority of the issues after updates might stem from underlying, unmentioned factors. Updates won't typically alter personal data but may refine settings or features. Backup before major updates for safety. Review Apple's update details and backup advice for a smooth process.

Kindly consider checking your settings and addressing any device issues before attributing the issue to external factors. This could be a pure coincidence that the iOS update affected the iPhone functions.

Before initiating a standard iOS update, it's advisable to create a backup. Have you completed this step? If yes, proceed with the restoration from the backup.

See what each update does: About iOS 17 Updates, About iOS 16 Updates, About iOS 15 Updates, About iOS 14 Updates, About iOS 13 Updates, About iOS 12 Updates, and so on...
