Muted group texts sending notifications to watch

My phone then watch updated overnight a couple days ago and since then I've been getting notifications to my watch for group text conversations that I have intentionally set to mute. This did not happen prior to these updates. I've searched the community and all of the responses on this topic discuss muting the ***APP*** notifications on the watch, not muting a specific group chat. To be clear, I do not want to mute all text messages on my watch -- just the text messages that I have set to "hide notifications" (mute) on my phone. This group text is grossly obnoxious, but it's one I can't leave. But I can't also get 100 notifications to my watch in a single hour either. There's a reason why I muted this group chat. Help!
