Removing a person in a photograph

How do I remove a person or object from a photo

iPhone 12, iOS 17

In Photos for Mac you can use the Retouch tool to erase the are with the person or clone some other pattern into the are to replace it. But this tool is not available in Photos iOS on an iPad or iPhone. There you need to use external editors make local adjustments in a photo.

At least as I have used retouch, it does not really remove a person from a photo. Rather it smears the initial circled area which you then drag over the person, and usually results in an amusing ghostly artifact in the picture. You may need to do additional smears .

For my purposes that is sufficient, as I not longer see the details, but am aware something was there
