2017 MacBook Pro issues with fan constantly running and slow

My 2017 Macbook Pro has gotten extremely slow and the fan is continuously running with multiple apps open. My battery life lasts maybe 2 hours tops if I'm doing multiple things. I'm in grad school currently in a doctoral nursing program and I am toggling between this, my iPad, and a 24" external monitor. I'm just wondering if it's time for an upgrade (not that I want to buy a new computer :) ) or if there is a way I can clean it out to make it faster/not kill my battery.

Thank you in advance!

The best means we'll have of offering you good advice involves you downloading and installing a free app called Etrecheck. This is a (did I say Free?) benign program that won't reveal any private information, but will let us see a lot of possible things that might be slowing your Mac down.

In this link you'll find a link to the app, along with instructions on how to post the report here. We'll then be able to analyze the report for possible issues: How to use the Add Text Feature When Post… - Apple Community

We can offer better advice once you post the Etrecheck report.
