iPhone Google Calendar location will not access contacts

I make a Google calendar entry to visit a friend. In Location, I put my friend's name. Instead of finding the obvious Contacts entry, it searches the internet for wildly inapt addresses half way around the world. This simple task used to work; in the stock iPhone calendar it still works. In the settings for Google Calendar I have enabled access to Contacts.

This worked very recently, maybe until a couple of days ago. I am on an iPhone 14 Pro with iOS 17.4.
