Keynote, Pages, Numbers, and other apps supporting Versions & autosave are not properly supported on SMB file shares.

TL;DR - Some Apple apps are unusable on SMB shares unless there is an option to disable auto-save.

I work at a video production studio where we often use Keynote as a quick graphic design tool as well as for any presentations given to us by clients. However, we are having an issue now that we are starting to use a NAS via a SMB share where files will attempt to autosave but fail with the following error:

This behavior appears both on our NAS running TrueNAS as well as our Synology DiskStation. Others have reported the same error on Dropbox, Google Drive, Synology, and there are plenty of examples on this apple support forum as well.

To be clear I am the only person with this file open. I created this file on my computer as a test, and no one else has it open. If I click "save anyway" the file saves and opens fine. The problem is that this pop-up appears just about every 30 seconds. I believe the problem is that SMB shares do not support the versioning protocols macOS calls for.

I have attempted both changing the file type to "Package" as well as enabling "Ask to keep changes when closing documents". (an option confusingly buried under a submenu inside of Desktop & Dock) and even giving Keynote "full disk access". Even still, I get this error.

What I want is to be able to disable auto-save yet this appears to not be an option. Is there a command I have not found, or is this simply not an option? If the option doesn't exist, how can I request a way for this option to exist? I am far from the only user with this issue, yet it seems to have been a problem for years now with no fix in sight.
